How to get regular shifts as an agency carer

Agency work gives you freedom — but not always steady hours. Here's how carers and nurses build regular work with the homes they like, and how direct rebooking turns one good shift into the next.

Ask agency carers what they like about the work and most say the same thing: choice. You pick your shifts, your homes and your hours. Ask what they'd change and the answer is just as consistent: it isn't always steady. One week is full, the next is quiet, and you're never quite sure where you'll be.

It doesn't have to be that way. The carers and nurses with the most regular agency work have usually done one thing well: they've become the person a home asks for by name. This guide explains how that happens — and how rebooking makes it easier.

The short answer

To get regular shifts as an agency carer:

  1. Build relationships with a few homes, rather than working everywhere once.
  2. Be reliable — on time, every time, and early warning if you can't make it.
  3. Keep your documents in date, so you're never blocked from booking.
  4. Turn on notifications, so you see new shifts and invites first.
  5. Say yes to some nights and weekends.

With an agency that offers direct rebooking, the homes you've impressed can invite you straight back.

Why agency work can be unpredictable

In a traditional agency, a care home phones in a shift and a consultant rings round until someone says yes. Whoever answers first gets it. That's fast for the home, but it means your week depends on being free at the right moment — and the home rarely gets to say who they'd like back.

From the home's side, a different face every shift is hard work too. Every new worker needs showing where things are, who needs two to assist, who likes their tea strong. So homes have every reason to want the same good people back. The question is whether your agency makes that easy.

What rebooking is, and how it works

Rebooking lets a care home invite a specific carer or nurse back for another shift, directly — instead of posting it to everyone and waiting to see who accepts.

On MAP HealthCare Connect it works like this:

  1. You work a shift at a home and submit your timesheet from the app.
  2. The home approves it — and if they were happy with you, they can rebook you in one tap.
  3. You get a direct invite on your phone, for the same site.
  4. You accept, and you're back with residents and a team who already know you.
◆ Why it matters

Every direct invite is a shift you didn't have to compete for. String enough of them together with the homes you like and agency work starts to feel a lot like a regular rota — with the freedom still yours.

Seven habits of carers who get asked back

Nothing here is complicated. But the carers who do all seven, every time, are the ones whose names homes remember.

1. Arrive early, ready to work

Ten minutes early, in the right uniform, with your ID. It gives you time for a proper handover and tells the nurse in charge they can relax.

2. Take the handover seriously

Listen, ask about anyone new or unwell, and check who needs two to assist. A carer who asks good questions at 8 a.m. saves the shift a lot of trouble by 10.

3. Learn names — residents' and staff

Remembering that Mrs Jones takes her tea without sugar, or that the deputy is called Sam, is small. It's also exactly what makes a home feel you're part of the team.

4. Follow the care plan, and record as you go

Do things the way this home does them, and write up your notes during the shift, not at the end. Clear, accurate records are one of the first things a senior notices.

5. Submit your timesheet on time, and accurately

Submit it from the app at the end of the shift, with the hours you actually worked. It makes the home's admin easy — and it's the moment they decide whether to rebook you.

6. If you can't make it, say so early

Things happen. What homes remember is whether they found out the evening before or ten minutes after the shift started. Early warning gives them time to find cover — and keeps their trust in you.

7. Keep your documents in date

An expired DBS, training certificate or right-to-work check blocks new bookings until it's renewed. Renew early, so you never miss an invite while you wait. Our guide to the documents you need covers what expires and when.

Choosing your homes

Regular work usually comes from three or four homes you know well, not twenty you've each visited once. When you find a home you enjoy — a good team, a sensible journey, residents you get on with — go back when you can. The more shifts you work somewhere, the more likely they are to ask for you first.

Think about travel too. A home twenty minutes away is one you can reach on a snowy morning or after a late finish, and that reliability is exactly what gets you rebooked.

Nights and weekends

Nights, weekends and bank holidays are the hardest shifts for homes to fill. Carers who are willing to cover some of them quickly become the people homes turn to first — and those relationships carry over into weekday day shifts too. You don't have to do every night; being someone a home can count on for some of them makes a real difference.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get regular hours working for a care agency?

Yes. Many agency carers work mostly at a few homes they know well. Reliability, good handovers and accurate timesheets make homes ask for you again, and agencies that offer direct rebooking make it easy for them to do so.

What does rebooking mean in agency care work?

Rebooking is when a care home invites a specific carer or nurse back for another shift directly, rather than offering it to everyone. On MAP HealthCare Connect, you receive the invite on your phone and can accept it in the app.

How do I get more agency shifts as an HCA?

Keep your documents in date, turn on notifications so you see new shifts first, be willing to cover some nights and weekends, and build relationships with a few homes so they invite you back.

What happens if my DBS or training expires?

You won't be able to accept new bookings until the document is renewed. Renewing early avoids any gap in your work.
